Educational Programming
In February 2003 The Actors Shakeseare Company introduced Shakespeare WINS! (Will In Neighborhood Schools), a unique new program using experiential teaching methods to serve disadvantaged youth in Hoboken, New Jersey and the surrounding communities of Hudson County. Directed by Mia Borrelli, ASC's Shakespeare WINS is a rare opportunity for many local high school students to enjoy an in-depth experience of classic theater.

2003-2004 Season
For the 2003-2004 school year, the company has developed an enhanced presentation of WINS. The expanded WINS program provides a five-part, in-depth experience of Shakespeare for middle schools and high schools. It is unique among arts-in-education programs in its hands-on, participatory nature.
In three preparatory classroom workshops, students will be immersed in the story, characters, language and themes of the play. ASC's professional actors elicit active, out-loud, on-their-feet participation from students during classroom workshops. Students are immersed in the play's story line and themes, and its place in Elizabethan times. Modern life and the universality of Shakespeare's work are explored with the students and theatrical traditions and styles are discussed. Activities and exercises include ASC's actors coaching short excerpts and exploring language with the students.

After these three workshops, students will attend a full-scale, ASC performance of the play at a special school matinee. After the performance, a follow-up classroom visit is conducted by the actor-teachers to facilitate discussion and answer questions regarding production.
2002-2003 Season
In our first presentation of WINS, 158 students participated in the classroom workshops. ASC then presented Romeo & Juliet through Shakespeare WINS to four Hudson County schools and a local teen center in February and March of 2003, its pilot presentation of the program.
